If you’re a fan of Tumblr’s recently updated Android app, consider the wisdom of Tumblr’s own Android expert Chris Haseman. He recently released his second book, Creating Android Applications: Develop and Design. Available for Kindle download and paperback purchase via Amazon, Chris shows you how to use the powerful set of Android tools to begin creating the next generation of Android applications.
“I wrote the book because learning Android is hard in a few ways,” he says. “Doing a bunch of searches on how to write an Android application gives you information without knowledge.”
Creating Android Applications provides a complete introduction to developing for Google’s mobile OS, offering tons of insights and hard-earned advice. After a tour of how to install and configure the Android SDK and Eclipse IDE, you jump right in to build your first Android project.
“Android has several traps for beginners all of which I’ve fallen into. The book, in a way, is my best attempt to help new people avoid them,” Chris says. “Plus, I’ve always wanted to dedicate a book to my wife, and this seemed like the shortest path to get there.”

We’re excited to announce the official launch of Storyboard, our new hub for in-depth conversations with Tumblr’s creative community. We’ll be posting regular features on creators working in and around Tumblr’s massively diverse cosmos — writers, musicians, animators, scientists, artists, archivists, chefs, comedians, or anyone else with a great story to tell. Today we’re talking about Michael Stipe, the New York Times, Afghanistan, and the design mechanics of the Tumblr Dashboard.
We want to hear your stories too. If you’re interested in submitting a story (or even a story idea) for us to publish, just post it on Tumblr tagged with #storyboard. Our editors will monitor the tag and the community’s interactions there, promoting stories that resonate. And if your story really works, we’ll ask to expand it for publication on Storyboard itself.
Last but not least, if you find yourself in New York City on May 10, we’d love to hang out at the official Tumblr meetup celebrating Storyboard’s launch. It’s at Powerhouse Arena, 7-9pm, with drinks on us and several Tumblr celebrity mystery guests (cough Topherchris, Tommypom, cough).

Name Hanging Rock Comics
Location Indiana
First post July 2011Taylor-Ruth makes comics about her life, the world, and the people around her. “I’ve always had a hard time with people, with school, feelings of rejection, loneliness, not fitting in… you know, the struggles all teenagers go through,” she explains. One day, she posted a comic from her personal diary, and the Tumblr community noticed. “I expected everyone to ignore the comic because it was about my life or whatever, but to my surprise it rapidly got notes. Posting the comics about my life was empowering,” she said. (Among other things, Taylor-Ruth loves thunderstorms, horror movies, spooky things, pizza, and hanging out at cemeteries.)

TUMBLR LOVES BRAZIL!
It’s true, we do. And to prove our affection, we’re hosting three big events in three different cities to commemorate the launch of our Brazilian Portuguese localization and the amazing creativity and diversity of the Tumblr community in Brazil. Come join us for a great time, and we’ll showcase all the cool stuff we have going on and still to come.
- May 20: Curitiba Meetup
- May 25: Rio de Janeiro Party
- May 26: São Paulo Party
See you soon / Nos vemos por lá!

It’s time to officially welcome Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese to Tumblr’s roster of supported languages!
This now makes Tumblr accessible in a total of 11 different languages. To celebrate in Brazil, we’ll be holding official Tumblr meetups/events in Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. And in Portugal, we’re teaming up with Vice in Lisbon to celebrate the Portuguese launches. Join us!
To turn on these new localized interfaces on Tumblr, head over to your Preferences page to switch your language settings. And be sure to follow Tumblr’s official Portuguese and Brazilian Staff Blogs, too.
